Pennsylvania cigar smokers should prepare to take action
Feb-6-2007
Don't brandish your swords and crossbows just yet, but if you live in Pennsylvania you may want to get out your sharpening stone. (I'm speaking figuratively, of course.) As I mentioned last week, Governor Rendell has proposed a tax increase on ALL tobacco products to help pay for his new state health care program.

According to my source at the Cigar Association of America - the Washington-based lobbying group dedicated to fighting OTP ("other tobacco products") tax legislation - Governor Rendell has proposed the following tax increases: An additional 10¢ per pack on cigarettes, 36¢ on moist snuff, chewing tobacco, and smoking (pipe) tobacco, and an additional tax of 36¢ per every 10 cigars.

While the CAA attempts to find out more information about the Governor's plan, sit tight and await further word. It is still very early in the legislative process; the bills must be introduced and hearings must held before any citizen action can be taken.
