A "Dear John" letter from Ohio
Feb-21-2007
Yesterday, I received the following email: "Hi folks, Just a quick FYI that I'm going to shortly unsubscribe from your 'specials e-mails for a very sad reason. I have nowhere to smoke cigars anymore - at least not until the weather warms up. Even the [private] country club I belong to, which had a dedicated cigar lounge, is shut down for business now. The law the voters passed last November was so severe, that virtually ANY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT may not permit smoking of any sort...period. I'm all for safety and protecting the lungs of non-smokers, but this is truly sickening. Any thoughts on how to challenge this 'blunt club' of a law would be appreciated. In the meantime, I've got two humidors stocked with cigars that I haven't been able to touch since the cold weather and snows came." - Sincerely, Paul M. in Cleveland, OH.

Paul: I feel your pain. There's no other way to put it then to say this is an outrage, not to mention the situation at your own country club.

The way I look at it, you can do one of three things:
1. Divorce your wife so you can smoke in the house whenever you like. Of course it probably wouldn't be very practical. Not only would it be the most expensive route, but you'd probably lose the house, too, and wind-up living in a smoke-free condo.

2. Build a well-ventilated "man cave" in or onto the house where you can enjoy your cigars year-round in privacy.

3. Find a group of guys (maybe from the country club) and a good lawyer who knows his way around the current Ohio smoking act. See if there's a way all of you can start a private men's club that would permit you to smoke inside, under the law.

Other than that, I guess you'll have to wait for Spring. But look at the upside: After that long Winter's nap, your cigars should smoke mighty nicely.
